Fire engineering — Testing and standards
Section 10 — Furnace tests, classification, and how they relate to structural design.
Standard fire tests
Furnace exposure to a standard temperature–time curve yields fire resistance ratings (e.g. R, E, I) for assemblies under defined support and loading.
Limits
Specimen size, loading, and boundary conditions may not match the as-built structure; extrapolation and engineering judgement are regulated.
Codes
National regulations and SANS product/test standards define what evidence is acceptable for compliance in South Africa.
